In celebration of Earth Day, Wildlife Alliance is helping rural Cambodians grow in harmony with wildlife and the environment in the Cardamom Mountain range. Through our Community Agriculture Development Project (CADP) and the creation of uniquely sustainable communities like Sovanna Baitong, we are reducing widespread deforestation and poaching in protected areas by introducing and supporting eco-friendly alternatives to cutting down trees and hunting wildlife to extinction.
The Sovanna Baitong community, whose name means “golden green,” sustains nearly 200 families on 1,500 hectares (3700 acres) of government-donated land. Each one of these families once lived a nomadic life in the forest, without access to schools or medical clinics, forced to eke out a living by wildlife poaching and slash-and-burn agriculture.
Working with the government, we have provided formerly landless families with 1.5 hectares of land each, along with seeds, greenhouses, plows, and technical training, as well as access to education, health care and other community services.
In this way, Wildlife Alliance is working to reverse decades of poverty and environmental degradation by helping previously landless families become land owners and stewards of their environment. Farmers are not only able to sustain their families on the land, but are also able to turn a profit by selling cash crops, fruits, vegetables, and other products at local markets and nearby restaurants and hotels. At the same time, their children have access to healthcare, schooling, and community support.
Your tax-deductible gift will help support Wildlife Alliance’s efforts to reduce the impact of human populations on wildlife and wild habitat. All donations will help Wildlife Alliance build and maintain sophisticated drip-irrigation systems, provide farmers with the technical training for permanent crops, support micro-enterprise efforts, help renovate and build new schools for communities, and support the reforestation of barren lands.
