Binturong (Arctictis binturong)
Status: Vulnerable
Description: Bearcat, Palawan Binturong
Habitat Range: This species is widespread in south and southeast Asia occurring in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippine, Thailand, and Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Numbers Left in the Wild: No data, population decline estimated to be more than 30% over the last 30 years
Primary Threats:
Habitat loss and degradation are a major threat to the binturong. Throughout this species' range, there has been loss and degradation of forests through logging and conversion of forests to non-forest land-uses. This species is also threatened by the pet trade and human consumption.
What we are doing to help:
- Our Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team rescues binturongs that are captured as part of the illegal wildlife trade.
- Once rescued, they are rehabilitated at our Cambodia Wildlife Rescue Center, and released into the protected forest if approprate.
- Our ranger teams, trained in wildlife protection and law enforcement techniques, patrol binturong habitats, stopping poachers and traders in their tracks to protect these animals.
