Greater Adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius)

Status: Endangered

Description:

Habitat Range:

Their native range is Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Numbers Left in the Wild: Estimated 650-800 in Assam and India plus 150-200 in Cambodia

Primary Threats:

Key threats are direct exploitation, particularly at nesting colonies, habitat destruction, including some felling of nest-trees, and drainage, conversion, pollution and over-exploitation of wetlands. Additionally, the Indian population is threatened by reduced use of open rubbish dumps for the disposal of carcasses and foodstuffs.

What we are doing to help:

Wildlife Alliance provides successful water bird release programs. Adjuncts breed well in the Rescue Center's very large waterbird aviary. The feathers of the chicks are clipped; however, when their feathers regrow, the birds will usually stay around to take advantage of the food that was provided every day.
