Yellow-headed Temple Turtle (Heosemys annandalii)
Status: Endangered
Description: Hieremys annandalii
Habitat Range: Found in Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Numbers Left in the Wild: No data
Primary Threats: It is threatened due to trade exploitation in Cambodia, Lao and Vietnam. Habitat loss remains a contributing factor throughout its range.
What we are doing to help:
- Our Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team frequently intercept shipments of live turtles at Cambodian borders where the offenders are arrested.
- Once rescued, the turtles are rehabilitated at our Cambodia Wildlife Rescue Center. If suitable, they are released back into the wild.
- Our ranger teams, trained in wildlife protection and law enforcement techniques, patrol turtle habitats, stopping poachers and traders in their tracks to protect these animals.
- Wildlife Alliance works with international hydropower companies and governments to protect the turtle's habitats by fighting against the construction of dams, especially in the Southern Caramom Mountains. Where we can't stop the construction of the dam, we are advising the government and companies of how best to mitigate the environmental impact of the dams.
