Who is Wildlife Alliance?
|
Wildlife Alliance is an international, not-for-profit conservation organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. with field programs and partners in Cambodia, Thailand and Russia. Since its formation in 1994, when it was known as the Global Survival Network and then later as WildAid, Wildlife Alliance has worked with local government, law enforcement agencies, communities and other like-minded NGOs to implement projects to address and combat various threats facing wildlife and wild habitat. Our mission is to protect wildlife and forests for future generations by implementing a suite of programs which address and balance the needs of both endangered wildlife and communities. Below you will find a list of our projects as well as information sheets (in PDF format) about various global issues afflicting our planet and its wildlife.

Below is a listing of our programs and partners in Southeast Asia and the Russian Far East:
In Cambodia
Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT) – Created in 2001 at the request of the Cambodian government, the WRRT is a mobile task force which rescues wildlife from poachers and wildlife traders and enforces national and international wildlife protection laws. Since the inception of the WRRT, 38,000 animals have been rescued.
Rangers Protecting the Southern Cardamoms – Beginning in 2002, Wildlife Alliance began to lend logistical, technical and financial support to rangers tasked with protecting the integrity of the Southern Cardamom Mountains, a biodiversity hotspot and vital watershed to Southwest Cambodia.
Care for Rescued Wildlife (CRW) – Wildlife Alliance's Care for Rescued Wildlife program cares for sick, injured and/or orphaned animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, many by the WRRT. Those animals healthy and suitable for release are returned to the wild, while others are provided humane, lifelong care at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.
Community Agriculture Development Project (CADP) – Wildlife Alliance is helping formerly landless, slash-and-burn farmers develop more sustainable agriculture and reverse a thirty year cycle of poverty and natural resource depletion which was the result of a destructive, unsustainable agrarian regime during the Khmer Rouge reign.
Community Based Ecotourism (CBET) – In rural villages like Chi Phat and Trapaeng Rung, Wildlife Alliance is teaching villagers how to develop a sustainable tourism industry which will allow visitors to experience the beauty of the Cardamom Mountains while providing income and jobs to rural villagers.
Kouprey Express Mobile Environmental Education Program (MEEP) – Wildlife Alliance's Kouprey Express mobile environmental education unit is a well-equipped bus that travels to rural schools to spread awareness about conservation issues in Cambodia. Using films, puppet shows, games, fieldtrips and other interactive tools and activities, the Kouprey Express is spreading a message of respect for the natural environment.
In Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia
ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) – Launched in 2005, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) is the world's largest wildlife law enforcement network involving police, customs and environmental agencies from the 10 ASEAN countries and involving the participation of other critical countries, namely China and the United States.
FREELAND (formerly PeunPa) - Wildlife Alliance's Thai partner, FREELAND, works to combat the inhumane and exploitive trafficking of humans and wildlife. As an environmental organization, FREELAND directly engages local communities to preserve natural habitats and prevent the illegal wildlife trade, while also partnering with human rights-oriented agencies and organizations to prevent human trafficking.
In Russia
Phoenix Fund - Wildlife Alliance's Russian partner, Phoenix Fund, is a non-governmental conservation organization based out of Vladivostock, Russia working to conserve the exceptionally rich fauna and flora of the Russian Far East, the only region where Amur tigers and Amur leopards survive in the wild.
