Taking root in Khao Yai National Park

A flurry of activity in recent months at Thailand’s Khao Yai National Park has set the park and its visitors buzzing.

In April, a group of 300 students participating in the Sai Jai Thai Youth Camp spent three days in Khao Yai learning about the forest, its wildlife and the importance of nature conservation.

The students, many of them from families badly affected by the 2004 tsunami, enjoyed hiking in the forest, singing folk songs, hands-on learning with animal bones and paw print casts, bird watching and other activities.

On May 30th, more than 100 students from different schools gathered in Khao Yai to repair 20 acres of park land where human encroachment has ravaged the forest.

The students’ tree-planting efforts helped elevate their understanding of forest conservation while also restoring wild habitat and combating global warming.

Finally, Wildlife Alliance's Thai partner, PeunPa, is celebrating the launch of the Khao Yai Sustainable Visitor’s Guide, an online guide to the park and its wildlife and featuring some of Khao Yai’s best sights and activities.

Forbes Traveler magazine recently listed Khao Yai as one of the “Top Spots for Southeast Asian Ecotourism,” and the new guide will help visitor’s book accommodation, plan their trip in the park, and suggest ways to reduce their impact while touring Khao Yai.
