The illegal wildlife trade is connected to other illicit trades – drugs, people, and weapons - through shared smuggling routes and the same offenders.

Human Health
Degradation of the environment and the disruption of ecosystems compromises the safety of people in a variety of ways. The illegal wildlife trade can expose people to zoonotic disease – disease which passes from animals to people. Ecological changes can increase the range of diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, so areas which previously did not support these illnesses suddenly are regions where infection is possible.
