The remarkable journey of baby elephant Lomphat has touched the hearts of conservationists and wildlife lovers worldwide. Rescued from a life-threatening situation, this young elephant is now on the path to recovery at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, thanks to the joint efforts of the Forestry Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), Wildlife Alliance, and the unwavering support of the public.

A Race Against Time: Lomphat’s Rescue Story

Lomphat was found in December 2023 near the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary headquarters in Ratanakiri province, suffering from a severe snare wound on her front right leg. The deep laceration, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of poaching and illegal wildlife traps, left her in an extremely weakened state.

Local villagers, in collaboration with Wildlife Alliance and conservation partners, acted swiftly to save her.

At just five months old and weighing only 138 kg—far below the healthy weight for an elephant her age—Lomphat’s chances of survival were uncertain. However, thanks to immediate medical intervention and round-the-clock care, she was transported to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, where she began her incredible fight for survival.

Expert Care and Unwavering Dedication

Lomphat’s recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary. In just two months under the expert supervision of Wildlife Alliance’s experienced veterinarians and elephant caretakers, she has gained 34 kg, now weighing 172 kg—a promising sign of her resilience and the effectiveness of the care she is receiving.

Dr. Suwanna Gauntlett, Founder and CEO of Wildlife Alliance, recently visited Lomphat to assess her progress, ensuring that the young elephant receives the highest level of veterinary care. Her recovery regimen includes a specialized diet rich in essential nutrients, round-the-clock monitoring, and medical treatments tailored to her needs.

Im Rachna, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), praised the collective efforts of Wildlife Alliance and its partners in Lomphat’s rehabilitation. She also acknowledged the generous contributions from the public—donations of funds, milk powder, and essential supplies have played a vital role in sustaining Lomphat’s care.

“Every visit to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre reinforces the importance of conservation work. Lomphat’s story reminds us why protecting Cambodia’s wildlife is crucial—not only for the animals but for our nation’s natural heritage,” Rachna stated.

Hope for Cambodia’s Wildlife Conservation

Lomphat’s journey is more than just a story of survival—it symbolizes the urgent need for continued conservation efforts in Cambodia. Elephants hold profound cultural and ecological significance in the region, yet their populations remain under constant threat from habitat destruction (illegal land encroachment) and poaching.

Her case is just one of the many rescues undertaken by Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, which serves as Cambodia’s leading rehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned wildlife. Through the dedication of Wildlife Alliance, countless animals like Lomphat are given a second chance at life.

Wildlife Alliance remains steadfast in its mission to combat poaching, protect natural habitats, and rehabilitate injured wildlife. But this work is only possible with the continued support of individuals who care about Cambodia’s wildlife.
