Protecting wildlife starts with education, and Wildlife Alliance’s Kouprey Express (KE) Environmental Education Program continues to make a powerful impact across Cambodia. Through interactive lessons, teacher training, and field trips to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center (PTWRC), the program is shaping the minds of future conservationists. In recent months, KE has reached thousands of students and teachers, equipping them with the knowledge to safeguard Cambodia’s rich biodiversity.

Reaching Schools and Communities

From December 2024 to February 2025, the KE team engaged with schools in Phnom Penh, Koh Kong, Kampong Speu, Takeo, and Kampong Chhnang provinces, delivering lessons on wildlife and habitat conservation. The program’s reach included:

  • December 2024: 3,046 students and 251 teachers participated in school-based lessons and workshops.
  • January 2025: 3,683 students across two schools and four PTWRC field trips to complement classroom lessons and activities.
  • February 2025: 4,166 students from two schools, alongside two PTWRC trips.

By directly engaging with students, teachers, and communities, the KE team fosters a culture of conservation where young minds learn about endangered species, deforestation, and wildlife protection.

Bringing Learning to Life at Phnom Tamao

A critical component of Wildlife Alliance’s environmental education efforts is hands-on learning at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center (Visit PTWRC). Recent study tours allowed students to witness firsthand the rescue and rehabilitation of animals affected by deforestation, poaching, and the illegal pet trade.

  • December 2025: 266 future teachers visited PTWRC to gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity and conservation.
  • January 2025: Nearly 900 students and teachers participated in interactive experiences at the center, learning about elephants, clouded leopards, sun bears, and other rescued wildlife.
  • February 2025: 630 teachers and students took part in PTWRC trips, reinforcing their classroom knowledge with real-world conservation lessons.

By integrating classroom education with immersive wildlife experiences, these visits strengthen students’ connection to nature and encourage them to become advocates for wildlife conservation.

Empowering Teachers to Spread Awareness

Teachers play a crucial role in passing on conservation knowledge to future generations. Wildlife Alliance’s KE program is actively training educators to incorporate wildlife conservation themes into their teaching. In December, KE trained 251 teacher candidates at the Phnom Penh Regional Teacher Training College, equipping them with resources and strategies to integrate environmental awareness into their classrooms.

Through this initiative, Wildlife Alliance ensures that knowledge extends beyond the classroom, reaching families and communities who can help protect Cambodia’s natural heritage.
