Every year, on the third Saturday of February, we observe World Pangolin Day to raise awareness about the plight of pangolins and support global efforts to protect these unique mammals from extinction.

What is World Pangolin Day?

World Pangolin Day highlights the urgent need to conserve pangolins, the only mammals covered in protective keratin scales. These gentle creatures are crucial to ecosystems. Despite their ecological importance, pangolins face severe threats from habitat loss and illegal trafficking for their scales and meat.

The Threats Facing Pangolins

Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals. Their scales are used in traditional medicine, and their meat is considered a delicacy in some regions. Despite international trade bans, poaching and illegal sales continue to endanger their survival. The Sunda Pangolins mostly found in Cambodia are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, leading to an 80% decrease in their population.

Wildlife Alliance: Protecting Pangolins on the Frontlines

Wildlife Alliance plays a vital role in combating pangolin trafficking through direct wildlife rescue, habitat protection, and law enforcement efforts. Since 2001, Wildlife Alliance has rescued over 445 live Sunda pangolins from the illegal wildlife trade. Their Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT) works tirelessly to intercept illegal wildlife shipments and rescue pangolins from traffickers, returning them to safety. Additionally, the Wildlife Release Station (WRS) focuses on rehabilitating rescued pangolins and, when possible, reintroducing them into their natural habitats. This dual approach not only aids in population recovery but also provides valuable insights into pangolin care and release protocols.
